📝 Mini Review
In Spy Drops, you take on the role of a counter-terrorist agent working to neutralize a threat that could plunge the world into digital darkness. Outside the tutorial missions, every mission is randomly generated, giving you full freedom in your approach – go stealthy, eliminate enemies or disable cameras. The choice is yours, and the game encourages experimentation.
Initially, I struggled with the controls. Switching between the top-down and third-person views felt a little clunky at first, but I quickly adapted and began navigating missions with confidence.
The visuals embrace a PSX-era retro aesthetic that instantly took me back in time. Having played on the original PlayStation, I genuinely appreciated this nostalgic trip. The game runs smoothly on the Switch 1; I haven’t tested it on Switch 2 yet, but we’ll be sharing gameplay footage soon on our LATAM Players channel.
Enemy AI can be underwhelming at times – encounters aren’t particularly challenging, and taking down foes is usually quite easy. That said, since I’ve only played early 1-star missions (the lowest difficulty), I expect things to ramp up in later stages.
Voice acting comes across as clean and professional. I’ve heard speculation that AI-generated voices were used, though I haven’t seen confirmation. Honestly, that wouldn’t bother me – if developers use AI to streamline production and enhance gameplay, I say go for it. Not everything about AI use should be viewed through a negative lens.
Overall, Spy Drops exudes strong Metal Gear Solid vibes, especially for fans craving that retro PSX flavor. It’s not a perfect title, but the atmosphere is spot-on. The animated tutorial does a great job walking players through the controls, and you can clearly feel the passion the developers poured into this experience.
âś… Pros
- Freedom of Playstyle: Missions are randomly generated and offer multiple approaches—stealth, direct combat, or surveillance takedowns—allowing players to choose their own strategy.
- Nostalgic Visual Style: The PSX-era retro graphics evoke classic stealth titles, offering a charming throwback for longtime fans of the genre.
- Solid Atmosphere and Tutorial: The game captures the spirit of Metal Gear Solid and includes an animated tutorial in the first mission that helps players ease into the mechanics.
❌ Cons
- Weak Enemy AI: Encounters can feel too easy and predictable, especially in early missions, reducing the challenge and immersion.
- Clunky Controls:Â Switching between camera views can feel awkward early on, requiring some adjustment before gameplay becomes more fluid.
- Possible Use of AI-Generated Voices: While professional-sounding, some players might find AI-generated voice work less authentic or emotionally engaging.
🔚 Final Verdict: 7/10 – GOOD
Spy Drops feels like a nostalgic leap back in time, delivering a solid Metal Gear Solid-inspired experience wrapped in PSX-style retro graphics – a treat for retro fans. While the enemy AI can be underwhelming and the possible use of AI-generated voices might be off-putting for some, it still earns a recommendation for anyone craving another taste of classic Metal Gear vibes.
