Within the Blade – Nintendo Switch Review

Release date: July 16, 2021. Price: $10.99 / £9.99 / 10.99€. Game file size: 179 MB. Publisher: Ratalaika Games.

Within the Blade is a fast stealth action game where you play as a Ninja to defend the village against the forces of a bad villain and his demonic allies.

While the game is fast and dynamic, you have to use your stealth ability to succeed in this game and each enemy type has to be approached differently. Levels are short and have one checkpoint where you restart after you’ve died.

After each level, you can unlock new moves and abilities at the shrine which will help you in further levels and with boss fights. There’s also a shop available to buy extras, new weapons and recipes to craft weapons. But both the shop and the weapon crafting don’t have the best understandable menues. I found it difficult to see what I can buy or what I can craft.

It’s also important to play the tutorial first to understand all the game mechanics as the game itself doesn’t tell you all the available moves and attacks. There’s also no help where you can see the button layout, and there are no settings to change it. I would have preferred blocking on a different button as I don’t like it on X.

Within the Blade plays well in both handheld and docked mode on Switch. The graphics look good with some great parallax scrolling and the soundtrack fits well. The game can be quite challenging but there are three difficulty modes available: easy, normal, and permadeath.

I found Within the Blade pretty entertaining but also a bit frustrating at times, mainly due to the unforeseeable traps. But with enough training, players can have lots of fun with this game.
